On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse traveled across the United States. Stretching from Oregon to South Carolina, the path of totality was a mere 70 miles wide. Many people made plans to be in this totality zone. There, the Sun could be viewed without the use of solar lenses for about 2 ½ minutes. During that 2 ½ minutes, the Sun was totally covered by the Moon.
This solar eclipse made us think of many things about Jesus related to the Sun in the Bible. There are times when God will use a total solar eclipse to get the attention of people. God has used many signs to reach the Jewish people.
Throughout history, there have been many times when a total solar eclipse has occurred. This is one of those events that will demand your attention. It appears there may have been a total solar eclipse when the veil in the temple was rent when Jesus died on the cross.
Solar Eclipse At Death Of Jesus
Luke 23:45 “And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.”
In this case, God wanted to draw the attention of those in Jerusalem and in the Temple. God wants the Jewish people to realize that the price for sin has been paid for and there is no more need for animal sacrifices. The Bible also speaks of the Sun being darkened when Jesus returns in His Second Coming to rescue Israel.
Solar Eclipse Just Before Second Coming Of Jesus
Joel 2:31 “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.”
Normally, a total solar eclipse is only visible from a certain part of the Earth. Since the whole Earth will see Jesus, the Messiah, when He returns, it appears that this darkening of the Sun will be a supernatural event different from a normal, total solar eclipse.
Revelation 1:7 “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.”
Total Solar Eclipse 2017
A small group of us, along with some family, had the opportunity to view the total solar eclipse of 2017 within the totality zone. No one in our group had ever seen a total solar eclipse before, so we were very excited to be there. Many viewers were prepared to preserve this once-in-a-lifetime moment via video or still photography. As the time of totality drew nearer, 1:15 pm central time, it was all quite a sight to behold!
The Heavens Declare God’s Glory
The Bible states that the heavens declare the glory of God, and that this heavenly message can be heard in any language.
Psalms 19:1-6 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.”
Scientists used to scoff at the idea of the Sun running in a circuit, as Psalm 19:6 states. They once believed that the Earth was the center of the universe and everything revolved around it. But, only in the last century did they discover that the Sun really does run in a circuit and everything revolves around it.
Often, the Bible compares the Sun in the sky to the glory of God. In fact, one day there will be no more need for the Sun in the sky because God Himself will be the light.
Isaiah 60:19 “The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.”
The Sun Represents Jesus The Son
Jesus is called the Sun of righteousness. The Sun in the sky represents God and His light. Jesus is called the Light of the world.
Malachi 4:2 “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.”
John 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Jesus allowed His glory to be shown to a select few of His disciples. When Jesus was transfigured before their eyes, He appeared to shine like the Sun to them.
Matthew 17:2 “And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.”
When Jesus appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus, he saw Jesus, who was brighter than the Sun.
Acts 26:13 “At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.”
When Jesus revealed Himself to John in the book of Revelation, His appearance was like the Sun shining at full strength.
Revelation 1:16 “And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.”
It is obvious from Scripture that our Sun in the sky represents the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Many Scriptures in the Bible refer to Jesus as being the Light that shines in the darkness or the Light of the world.
Solar Eclipse In 2017 Changed Things
During the 2017 eclipse, as the Moon came closer to completely covering the Sun, several things began to happen, besides the sky becoming darker. Colors began to appear more defined as the hue in our surroundings changed to almost a golden color. The temperature dropped from about 90° to around 70° in a matter of moments. Streetlights came on, fireflies were seen glowing about, and farm animals headed for home. As totality began, the sky went from daylight to dusk. It looked like an evening sunset right in the middle of the day!
Just as the total solar eclipse made a noticeable difference to our surroundings, when Jesus, the Light, shines in your life He will make a noticeable difference to those around you. When Jesus lives inside of you, then you are the light of the world and the light of Jesus will shine in your life for those around you to see.
Matthew 5:14 “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
Glorious Diamond Ring Solar Eclipse 2017
The most spectacular part of the eclipse of 2017 was what is known as the diamond ring effect. As the Moon covered the Sun, a complete ring became visible around it with only one small glowing spot showing. This made the whole thing resemble a giant, diamond solitaire ring. As the Sun’s brightness disappeared behind the Moon, a large sparkle glistened on this diamond solitaire ring in the sky.
Sun Is Like A Bridegroom
Many times in the Bible, the Sun is referred to as being male and the Moon is referred to as being female. If the Sun represents Jesus then what or who does the Moon represent? Since the Moon is the counterpart to the Sun and the Sun is referred to as a bridegroom, then it appears the Moon may be a representation of the Bride of Christ or the wife of the Sun, Psalms 19:4-5, Isaiah 13:10.
Revelation 19:7-8 “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.”
As the Bride of Christ will one day be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, the Moon also appears to be arrayed in all white. As we (the Bride) are to be followers of Christ, the Moon follows the Sun. Each day, it appears as if the Sun and Moon come forth from a chamber or closet when they rise. But, only during a total solar eclipse do they actually cross paths so completely.
Joel 2:16 “Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.”
As the Sun and Moon overlapped, creating this diamond ring effect, the total solar eclipse seemed to symbolize the marriage of the Lamb, the Son of God, Jesus, and His Bride, the Church. What a beautiful picture this represents! We are also reminded of God the Father being the husband of Israel.
Isaiah 54:5 “For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”
Doorway In The Sky—Jesus The Door
The most amazing part of the 2017 eclipse was when the Sun almost completely disappeared and a black hole seemed to open up in the sky.
For over two minutes, this amazing hole in the sky appeared over our heads. For many, it may have simply looked like a hole in the sky. But, as we stood there gazing upward at this breathtaking sight, it made us think of the day Jesus, the Messiah, will return to this Earth. First, He will return in the Rapture to catch His Bride away. Then, seven years later, Jesus will set His feet on the Mount of Olives preparing to rule and reign on this Earth! First, Jesus will defeat the enemies of Israel in the Battle of Armageddon.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
Revelation 19:11,14 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.”
What an amazing sight it was to behold a total solar eclipse, but what an even more amazing sight it will be when we shall behold Him, the Creator of all things, Jesus, the Messiah! The believers of the Church will be amazed when they see Jesus at the Rapture. The Jewish people will finally realize that Jesus is their Messiah when they see Him in the Second Coming.
Jesus The Star
Numbers 24:17 “I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.”
Face To Face With Jesus
1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”
Jesus Is The Light Of The World
John 1:1-12 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
If you do not know Jesus as your Saviour, trust Him today before it is too late. One day, the sky shall unfold, preparing His (Jesus’) entrance, and we shall behold Him, (Jesus) then face to face! It will be much better to meet Him (Jesus) as Saviour and Lord than as Judge and executioner.
