Locusts In Tribulation

In the second half of the prophesied seven-year Tribulation, demonic, supernatural locusts will be released from the bottomless pit in the Earth to torment unrepentant sinners for five months. These supernatural locusts will not eat crops like normal locusts. These evil, demonic locust beings are ruled by an evil angel in the bottomless pit. The following Scriptures from Revelation 9 describe the terrible events that will happen when the fifth judgment trumpet is blown by a holy angel of God.

Revelation 9:1-12 “And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.  4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. 12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.”

The fifth angel will blow his trumpet to announce the coming judgment on the Earth. This frightening judgment, along with others, will happen during the second half of the prophesied seven-year Tribulation. When the fifth angel blows his trumpet, “a star falls from heaven”. This falling star represents one of God’s holy angels. Just like there are movie stars that the world admires, God has His holy stars. Those saints who turn people to righteousness through Jesus are considered to be like stars, Daniel 12:3. There are also holy, angelic stars in Heaven that God admires. In the book of Job, we see that the stars (angels of God) sing, Job 38:1-7. Just because John, the writer of Revelation, says that he “saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth”, it does not mean that the angel who falls is a fallen, corrupt angel. This simply means that the angel came to the Earth so quickly that it looked to John like he was falling. God would not trust the key to the bottomless pit to an evil, fallen angel. We can be certain that the star is a living, angelic being because the star is called “him”, Revelation 9:1.

Also, notice that when Satan is bound for a thousand years, after the seven-year Tribulation, during the reign of Jesus on Earth, an angel has the key to the bottomless pit. This is possibly the same angel that is called a star in Revelation 9.

Revelation 20:1-3 “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”

During the fifth trumpet judgment, the angel who has the key to the bottomless pit will use the key to open the bottomless pit. When He opens the bottomless pit, smoke will rise out of the pit. The smoke will be so dense that the sun and the air will be darkened. It may be in the middle of the day, but it will appear dark, like night. The bottomless pit appears to be tormenting hot, like a great furnace. Where there is smoke there is fire, Revelation 9:2.

Supernatural, demonic locusts will come out of the dark smoke that escapes from the bottomless pit when it is opened. They will be like alien invaders on the Earth. It is possible that these evil locusts were once cherubs that worshiped and served God. They have some similarities to the angelic cherubs who are described in Ezekiel 10. It appears that these locust beings made a choice not to serve God. As a result of their rebellion, they were locked in the bottomless pit. God will give them power to accomplish His goals during the Tribulation period. The locusts will have power, like scorpions have against those they sting, Revelation 9:3.

Normal locusts, that God created, eat the grass and every other green vegetation that is available. But, these locusts are supernatural beings. It is possible that they have the ability to eat grass and other green things, but they will be commanded not to eat like normal locusts. They will be commanded to hurt those unrepentant sinners who do not have the seal of God in their foreheads. In Revelation 7, and Revelation 14, we are told by John that 144,000 Jewish men from the 12 tribes of Israel receive a seal from God in their foreheads. They will be sealed before the first of seven angels sound their trumpets, as seen in Revelation 8. This 144,000 who receive the seal of God are not from the false cult Jehovah Witnesses’. God will rescue the Tribulation Saints before the great Tribulation. The great Tribulation will take place during the second half of the prophesied seven-year Tribulation. Those people who get saved during the Tribulation will not be tormented by the demonic locust beings. Of course, anyone who is a believer on the Lord Jesus Christ as their own personal Saviour will be caught up to Heaven in the Rapture before the seven-year Tribulation begins, Revelation 9:4.

The demonic locusts will not be allowed to kill the unrepentant sinners. But, instead, the locusts will torment them for five months. After the thousand-year reign of Jesus, those people who are in Hell will be taken out of Hell. After they are judged at the Great White Throne Judgment, they will be cast into the Lake of Fire. They will be punished according to their deeds. All people are cast into Hell because they do not accept Jesus as their Saviour before they die. No one is cast into Hell because they did not do enough good works. We cannot do good works to earn our way to Heaven or to escape Hell. But, there will be degrees of punishment for those who die unsaved, without Jesus as their Saviour. If a person who is in Hell has done more wicked deeds, such as Hitler, their punishment in the Lake of Fire will be worse. It is very possible that there will be evil, demonic locusts in the Lake of Fire to torment the lost sinners forever. In the Lake of Fire, the unsaved people will never be able to die. It appears that the torment by the supernatural, locust beings will be a terrifying introduction to the everlasting torment that they are headed for in the Lake of Fire. During the Tribulation, these unrepentant sinners will be tormented for five month by the locusts, using their scorpion tails to sting them. They will be in constant pain when the locusts sting them with their scorpion tails, Revelation 9:5.

Presently, there are some scorpions that are so poisonous that their sting kills. The results of the toxin from the scorpion tails will be so painful that those stung will want to die. It appears that the pain will be so unbearable that many of these people will even try to commit suicide. But, it will be impossible for them to die. Just like the Lake of Fire, there will be no escape from the torment. Even if a person shoots their brains out, they will not be able to die. No one will be able to assist them in suicide. There will not be any escape from the tormenting locusts with scorpion tails, Revelation 9:6.

The description given of the demonic locusts, from the bottomless pit, is not figurative or imaginary. There are many strange beings that God has created. This is what they literally look like. It appears that their body has the appearance and strength of a horse. They will be able to run quickly and catch people who are fleeing their tormenting sting. On their head will be as it were crowns of gold. The golden crowns probably reveal that these demonic locusts had a place of authority before they fell in rebellion against God. Their face looks like the face of a man. It appears that they have long, silky hair, like a woman. Their teeth are like the teeth of a lion. This seems to indicate that they are able to devour their prey, like a lion, if allowed. But, during the five months of torment by the locusts on Earth, they are not allowed to kill or torment with their lion-like teeth. The locusts have breastplates like iron. This will protect their vital organs, if necessary, from any enemy attacks. They are prepared to do battle. The locusts have wings. They are capable of flying, like a flying chariot, at great speeds to attack those who are fleeing from them. There will be no hiding or outrunning these locusts that do not retreat in battle. Those being attacked will not be able to kill these locusts with technology or any other way. Their scorpion tails will be able to sting the unrepentant sinners over and over. The picture at the top of this article is to give you an idea of what these demonic, supernatural locusts may look like. But, it is very likely that they will look much more terrifying than we can imagine, Revelation 9:7-10.

Scorpions Sting

It is likely that the demonic locusts will have a scorpion tail similar to the scorpion in the picture above. The stinger is at the tip of the tail. Some people who have been stung by a scorpion describe how painful it was for them. The following is a quote from a person who was stung by a scorpion twice:

“I was just stung twice in the back last week by a brown scorpion. I was using an outdoor spa and dropped a robe on the ground. When I put it back on 30 minutes later the scorpion got me twice just below my right shoulder blade. My symptoms were immediate, sharp pain and numbness at the site, followed by slowly spreading pain and numbness across the upper right quarter of my back (basically the entire lateral muscle group). I took two Advil and immediately put an ice bag on the site which helped quite a bit. I did not experience any systemic effects that night but about 12 hours later I developed tingling and sharp pains on the inside of my lips and the tip of my tongue. After 36 hours all the venom was metabolized and I felt fine.” (1)

Those stung by the locusts with scorpion tails during the Tribulation may feel some of the following symptoms. But, the symptoms most likely will be worse than the severe symptoms resulting from a normal scorpion sting. The locusts from the bottomless pit appear to be much bigger and more toxic than locusts that we may encounter. It is likely that their scorpion stinger will cause much more pain than most scorpions that would sting us presently:

What are the symptoms of a scorpion sting?

In general, the sting usually causes discomfort that slowly decreases over time. The discomfort, described below, usually ranges from moderate to severe.

A person who has been stung by a scorpion may feel a painful, tingling, burning or numbing sensation at the sting site.

The reaction at the sting site may appear mild. Rarely, a person experiencing a serious reaction may develop severe symptoms throughout the body.

Severe symptoms include:

widespread numbness,

difficulty swallowing,

a thick tongue,

blurred vision,

roving eye movements,

salivation, and

difficulty breathing.” (2)

Normal locusts do not have a leader, king. They just swarm together when attacking vegetation, Proverbs 30:27. An evil angel king rules over the supernatural locusts in the bottomless pit. It is likely that the king of the locusts will lead in the attack on the unrepentant sinners on Earth. But, of course, God will make sure that the locusts and their evil angel king do not go beyond the commands given to them. The angel king of the bottomless pit is named Abaddon in the Hebrew language and Apollyon in the Greek language. This evil angel king’s name means destroyer, Revelation 9:11.

Unrepentant sinners being tormented by the locusts for five months are the first of three woes in the second half of the Tribulation. Some synonyms of woe are: misery, sorrow, distress, wretchedness, sadness, unhappiness, heartache, heartbreak, despondency, despair, depression, regret, gloom, melancholy, adversity, misfortune, disaster, suffering, and hardship. You can avoid all of this trouble by being saved. But, of course, if you die before you are saved, it will be too late for you. There is no more opportunity to be saved after death, Revelation 9:12.

If you have not repented of your sins and believed on Jesus as your personal Saviour, we encourage you to do it before it is too late. You can avoid the prophesied seven-year Tribulation and the torments if you get saved before it begins. The longer you put off being saved the harder it becomes to be saved later. Today is the day of salvation. Call on Jesus in a sinner’s prayer and ask Him to save you today. Let us know if you accept Jesus as your Saviour.
